Why this worries people, reasonably

Your number is on the van, the yard sign, three hundred business cards and every invoice you have sent for a decade. It is on a Google listing with reviews attached to it. Handing that to a supplier feels like handing over the keys, and people are right to hesitate.

So the short version is that you do not hand it over. It stays exactly where it is.

How it actually works

You dial a short code once on your own phone. From then on, a call that you do not pick up within a few rings continues to the assistant instead of dropping into voicemail. A call you do answer never leaves your handset.

Nothing is transferred, nothing is bought, and no account changes hands. Your carrier is still your carrier and the bill is still yours.

Ask whether they want you to port the number. Some providers do, because a ported number is much harder to leave behind, and that is the point.
